Slowly, people began to move in because the eastern part of the state had good hunting, good water, and good land in the valleys. These settlers had small farms, just like elsewhere in Kentucky. Over the years, however, the region became cut off from the rest of the state and did not grow as much. Some bitter feuds were started, the most famous being the Hatfield-McCoy feud in Pike County. Many others raged for years, and hundreds of people died. At that time, more than a century ago, Appalachian stereotypes developed when people from outside the region came in and wrote stories about the land and its people and then made films about it.
