John Bartram, America's outstanding botanist, arrived at Charles Town to visit Dr. Alexander Garden (d. 1791) and study southern plants during his first trip to South Carolina. April 1. Colonel Archibald Montgomery arrived in Charles Town from the north with 1,200 Highland troops and soon marched against the Cherokees. June 27. After being ambushed, Montgomery's force retreated to Charles Town. August 8. The besieged garrison at Fort Loudoun was starved into surrendering. On the next day the Cherokees massacred the garrison but Attakullakulla ("The Little Carpenter") saved the life of Captain John Stuart.

The first step in the Revolution of 1719 (in which the Carolinians overthrew Proprietary rule) was taken when the Assembly transformed itself into a convention of the people. December 21.
