Across the country, there are angry parents and students who have complained about the Core-Plus math system. Break down the concept/skill or problem solving strategy into logical and learnable parts (Ask yourself, "What do I do and what do I think as I perform the skill?"). Let’s see, that means that I can have two more children because four plus two equals six.” Placing cards with the numerical number and corresponding dots for the number of children allowed in each center area will encourage children to become confident with math concepts.

From small group instruction and flexible grouping to shared and common assessments, I'd like to share what my team is doing this year. One logical and empirically supported approach is to address computation fluency problems where they are detected with intervention, and to directly assess conceptual understanding on related tasks (e.g., counting vs. more/less judgments; multiplication/division facts vs. solving a word problem that involves building equal sets).

But to whatever extent we are dissatisfied with their proficiency, there is good reason to believe that the traditional model of instruction bears a large part of the responsibility. Sometimes things that sound great in theory aren’t all that impressive in practice. Excerpt: "At the elementary and middle school levels, basal mathematics programs are frequently used to guide instruction.

For mathematical learning, the purpose of a portfolio is to understand “student thinking, student's growth over time, mathematical connections, student views of themselves as mathematicians, and the problem solving process” (Stenmark, 1991, p.37). Lessons that require a teacher, horrifically dull examples, and forbidding language are all hurdles that homeschoolers must survive when looking at math curriculum...or do we? As a result, the amount of manpower necessary to train aircrews and maintenance technicians on the new equipment has been significantly reduced.

I strongly believe that every math major and high-school student should have a copy of your text! Dedicate time each day to teaching math, and integrate math instruction throughout the school day. Such teachers use powerful representations of concepts and transparently link mathematical vocabulary and symbols with actions on materials. Being taught the concepts in a concrete way would have made all the difference for me.
